If you are testing out a automatic car, when shifting into drive or other gears hold down the brake as you shift gears, if you feel a jerk it could mean that the engine mounts are shot....and that could be costly.
Pay attention to how the automatic transmission shifts. You want firm shifts and no unusual noises. If the motor seems to rev up between shifts, or if you notice any hesitation the transmission probably needs work.
If you are testing out a manual car be sure to check out the clutch make sure it doesn’t slip or make any noise. To check it put the car in 3rd or 4th gear, slow down to about 10MPH to 15MPH and accelerate, if the clutch is slipping, instead of accelerating steadily, the motor will rev up almost like it’s in neutral.
If allowed check the spark plugs, they tell you a lot about the car such as if it overheats or has engine problems they are trying to hide.
Check the oil, if it is a tarnish color could indicate a blow head gasket.
When the car is running look at the exhaust coming out and make sure that it there is not any black or blue smoke or making excessive noise. This could indicate that the car has some serious engine problems.
Notice if the car doesn’t pull, wander or shake. If it does this could indicate an alignment problem, a suspension problem and or a tire problem.
When driving pay attention to the braking system of the car. If everything is right then the car should stop smoothly without pulsating, squeaking or grinding. Also, make sure the brake pedal has firm pressure and doesn't have a squishy feel when braking.
Check the air conditioning for cold air, and heater/defroster for warm air.
Listen for rattles and squeaks. This could be a variety of things such as worn out belts to broken or worn out parts, could be costly or inexpensive if you can pin point it and know a little about cars.
